Federal authorities have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
