England and Welsh Drawn Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was conducted by rugby legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts will face off in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, promising a major pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing mirrors their memorable clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the English team's surprise early exit.

Key Group Draws

Ireland and the Scots also share a pool together, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they secured a 36-14 win, with their opponents failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as underdogs in France, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked the Springboks until the final, assuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

Should the pools play out according to the current global standings, further top favourites like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both England and the Irish until the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture designed to jump-start the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and Romania. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in 2023.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in the competition's existence.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
