Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
