Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the ability to contest specific calls made by the official, mirroring the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
