Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
